The Three ‘Inter-University Exchange Projects’ at TUFS

Have you heard of the ‘Inter-University Exchange Project?’ The Inter-University Exchange Project is a funding project established in 2011 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) that aims to foster human resources capable of being globally active, and to assure the quality of mechanisms for the mutual recognition of credits and grade management through an international framework, by receiving financial support for efforts towards the formation of collaborative programs with universities in places such as Asia, US and Europe, that conduct study abroad programs for Japanese students and undertake the strategic acceptance of foreign students.
TUFS had previously been selected to participate in ‘Inter-University Exchange Projects’, with Latin America in 2015 and ASEAN countries in 2016 respectively and has been working on these projects since then.
In addition, “TUFS Japan-Russia Student Mobility Program: Creating Business Networks and Fostering Human Interaction” has been selected as one of the ‘Inter-University Exchange Projects’ in August 2017.

TUFS – Russia (from academic year 2017)
TUFS Japan-Russia Student Mobility Program: Creating Business Networks and Fostering Human Interaction
This program is a collaborative initiative between TUFS and six renowned Russian universities. It aims to strengthen the academic ties between us for better higher education and research, to develop collaborative relations to promote Japan Studies and Japanese language education and to promote student exchanges with diverse frameworks including a credit transfer program.
This program is comprised of three types of exchange programs – short-term and long-term exchange programs and an internship program – and will strengthen Russia-related education, Japan-related education, and practical economic education at each university in a multidirectional and multifaceted manner.
Under the three programs in this project, with the aim of strengthening Japanese-Russian collaboration, we will nurture human resources who will be active in Japan-Russia business with the following skills.
-Trilingual in Russian, English and Japanese at a high level
-Knowledge in the history, society, culture and economy of both Japan and Russia, and basic knowledge indispensable for business such as economics, statistics and accounting
-The decisiveness necessary to coordinate the demands of diverse stakeholders, resolve issues, and imaginative and coordinative skills to respect others as well as self-initiative and creativity
By fostering these skills in a well-balanced manner, we aim to nurture excellent Japan-Russia business personnel with the diligence to engage in diverse business fields after graduation, and thus to contribute to the strengthening of collaboration between Japan and Russia.

An Interview with Project Leader, Professor Kyoko Numano
The TUFS Japan-Russia Student Mobility Program is aimed at providing students both from TUFS and six partner universities in Russia with specialized education and work experience opportunities combining short- and long-term exchange programs and internship program. For this purpose, we have found internship companies in diverse business fields with the cooperation of Tokyo Gaigokai, an alumni association, and the TUFS Japan-Russia Business Network, comprised of TUFS graduates working in various fields of business involving Japan and Russia.
We shall endeavor to develop human resources with advanced language skills, well-educatedness, and flexible intelligence, as well as the imagination to respect others, a love of peace and freedom, and both the negotiating capabilities and the flexibility necessary to resolve various issues and thus play critical roles in Japan-Russia business relations. Through this project, we plan to strengthen the cooperation between our university and the six Russian partner universities and to nurture students who are ready to contribute to a wide range of business fields in both countries.
TUFS – ASEAN (from academic year 2016)
TUFS Japan Specialist Program for the Enhancement of Japanese Language and Cultural Outreach in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia
This program is an undertaking by Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) and the University of Yangon, the National University of Laos and the Royal University of Phnom Penh, which are the top universities in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, respectively. Expectations are high that these three universities will grow into centers for Japan studies and Japanese language education in those regions.

- Graduate Exchange Program (Development of specialists in the concerned country, and research investigations across various fields)
An Interview with Project Supervisor, Professor Reiko Suzuki
Even in South-East Asian countries that have continuously been supporting exchanges with Japan in recent years, namely Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, it can be said that there is an urgent need for improvement in the structure of Japanese culture and language education. This project was established together with partner institutions that have good relations with TUFS, and was created to revolve around students and contribute to the education of future generations. We are working hard to train students from Japan and these three countries to be knowledgeable about Japan and Japanese language education, so that they can succeed on an international stage in the future.

TUFS – Latin America (from academic year 2015)
A Co-Creative Education Program of Humanities and Sciences to Solve Global Issues Confronting Japan and Latin America (La-CEP)
Collaborative initiative between Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), and the University of Electro-Communications (UEC)
This project is a collaborative initiative between Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), and the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) to jointly foster human resources, who will develop a practical vision and take an active role in the global community to solve global-level issues including environment, resources, energy, food, and socioeconomic development that affect Latin America and Japan.

An Interview with Project Supervisor, TUFS Vice President Minoru Iwasaki
This project is a cooperative project between Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and The University of Electro-Communications, and is a program that acts as the first step towards training more human resources with a background in both humanities and sciences. These three universities cooperate in sending and receiving exchange students, with students participating in pre-exchange education through which both humanities students from TUFS, and science students learn about problem-solving together. Furthermore, through studying abroad and internships, we strive to foster ‘global people’ that will succeed as citizens of the world. Please look forward to our results.
