【ALL STUDENTS】2020 Spring Quarter Precautions
April 13, 2020
In preparation for the start of classes on April 20 (Monday), class registration for the 2020 spring quarter will be available from today onwards. Below are a list of precautions regarding this quarter for all students. Please check this list thoroughly.
- (1) Class Registration
- (2) Class Changes
- (3) Purchasing Textbooks
- (4) Online Classes in the Research and Lecture Building
- (5) Library Access
- (6) Equipment & Internet Access
- (7) Financial Support
(1) Class Registration
If you do not register for classes during the first registration period, April 13 (Mon) – 17 (Fri), you will not be able to participate in online classes from April 20 (Mon). The meeting IDs for classes taught via Zoom will be sent to registered students from April 18 (Sat). Please complete your registration by April 17 (Fri). An instructional video on class registration is available through the link below.
If you wish to make changes to your class schedule after classes begin, please do so during the second class registration period. This will occur during between the third and fourth week of classes. Since class changes can be expected in the first four weeks, meeting IDs will change and be sent out multiple times. Please check the GAKUMU Information System regularly to avoid any confusion. In addition to this, for the 2020 academic year only, TUFS has added a class drop period from June 1 (Mon) – 3 (Wed). During this period, students can drop classes, but cannot register for additional classes.
(2) Class Changes
Due to the move to online classes, some classes have been moved to a different quarter. Please click the link below for more details.

(3) Purchasing Textbooks
Until now, textbooks were available for purchase with a 10% discount at the Student Co-Op on campus, but due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, we will be adopting a different method of purchase and distribution. Language textbooks for each major will be sent to first-year students this weekend. Please order your required textbooks from the Student Co-Op Website. This time only, postage will be paid at the University’s expense. Further details can be found on the Student Co-Op website.

(4) Online Classes in the Research and Lecture Building
In light of the state of emergency and request for self-isolation in Tokyo, TUFS has decided to close its Research and Lecture Building to general use. However, we will allow students living near campus, and students who cannot sit online classes, entry into this building. We ask that students register at the main entrance by the Central Plaza (enkei hiroba), avoid closed spaces, crowds and close contact, and use the classrooms they have been assigned. To facilitate this, all other entrances will be locked.
For students with their own laptops, please remember to also bring your own charger and earphones or headphones. Please also ensure that your laptop has a built-in camera and microphone. Students who do not own suitable equipment may use our computer lab facilities.
(5) Library Access
In light of the state of emergency and request for self-isolation in Tokyo, and for the health and safety of TUFS students and faculty, TUFS has decided to make library access by appointment only. The library’s opening hours will also be limited to weekdays from 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00. These measures will be in place until May 7 (Thu), but are subject to change.
As an alternative, the TUFS Library will also offer a book delivery service. Further details on this can be found on the Library website.

(6) Equipment & Internet Access
In preparation for the shift to online classes, TUFS conducted surveys on equipment and internet accessibility with new students (March 30 – April 1) and current students (April 3). Based on these results, the TUFS Academic Support Center has individually contacted those who indicated they have issues gaining access to the required equipment and internet.。
If you did not answer the survey, or were left out of the survey (namely postgraduate students), and have questions regarding equipment and internet access, please contact the following email address as soon as possible.

(7) Financial Support
Due to the rapid societal changes caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus, TUFS is offering support to students facing financial difficulties. First, we recommend applying for financial aid through the Japan Student Services Organization.

TUFS will also offer emergency loans. These loans are interest-free, so they are aimed at aiding emergency evacuation, but we hope they can still be useful in the current situation. More details on this will be available soon on the TUFS website.
If you are experiencing any further problems, please contact the Student Counseling Room as soon as possible.
