1. Research Interests and Teachings at TUFS
This year (2016) I am finishing a book on youth radicals (rightwing and leftwing) and their relationship with political violence in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
In the autumn term 2016 I am teaching a class entitled 'Japanese Modernity', which surveys the historiography (史料編纂) of Modern Japan. In the spring term 2017 I will teach a class that surveys the history of contemporary Japan (Japan since 1945), with specific emphasis on the impact of various social movements from CHUPIREN to AMPO to SEALDS. Of course, I am also giving special lectures from time to time, and happy to speak with students with specific questions about how Western scholars view Japanese history
2. To Strengthen Japanese Dispatch Capabilities
An open research environment with an emphasis on publishing for academic and general audiences. I think it's equally important that TUFS Japanese Studies have a strong social media outreach program.
3. My Impressions of the TUFS and the TUFS students
Very nice, and interested in a great variety of cultures!
4. The Strengths and the Deficiencies of Japan, Seen Without
Japan is a very comfortable place to live, and with that perhaps would be good if Japan were to continue to find ways to help the world live this well.
