| Outline | Japan's postwar, sengo, is a chrononym (name of time) long enduring and thick with meanings, like a palimpsest with one layer laid over another for more than seventy-five years. This lecture examines the multiple meanings of sengo in political, economic, social, and historical terms and suggests their commonalities and differences with the understanding of "the postwar" in other countries. It concludes by suggesting that the present period might well be called "sengomatsu," as it witnesses the long end of Japan's long postwar. |
