Title The New Aleppo: the Neighbourhood Experiences of Syrian Refugees in Adana, Turkey and the Limits of Refugee Governmentality
Abstract Refugees are subjected to multiple forms of disciplinary and regulatory practices since the current international refugee regime legitimatizes only certain kinds of political interactions and solutions. (Lui, 2004: 131). Through the findings of site visits in Kocavezir, Sakirpasa and Yesilevler, the three major neighbourhoods that have hosted the largest number of Syrian refugees and become to be known therefore as the New Aleppo in the Turkish border town of Adana, and open-ended interviews conducted in January-February 2016 with both the Syrian refugees and the locals residing in these neighbourhoods, this paper will piece together the daily realities of life for the Syrian refugees, the impact of their arrival, contribution to the society and interaction with the locals in Turkey. By bringing into light the major issues that the refugees and the local population are facing, the article will scrutinize hence the limits of the international and national refugee regime/s and how such limitations translate into contesting and redefining the traditional understandings of citizenship. Drawing upon the findings, the paper will also try to suggest some elucidations to how to dig a tunnel into the current refugee governmentality.
