Course Guide -- Two Approaches to Mastering Languages and Cultures

In the third year, students proceed to the stage of studying their specialized fields in more depth. Students select either Regional Studies or Trans-Regional Studies to further study their major field. Main seminars (seminars on specialized subjects where faculty members take on the role of academic supervisors) begin in the third year and students proceed to their graduation research in the fourth year.

Regional Studies

Students select a specific linguistic area in the ten regions in the world (Northwest Europe and North America, Central Europe, Southwest Europe, Iberia and Latin America, Russia, Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East) and focus on a specific research field such as linguistics, literature, the arts, music, film, thought, religion, and contemporary culture.

At the same time, students explore multiple research areas and study from different academic perspectives. By focusing on a specific field while broadly learning various languages, literature, and culture to accumulate deep knowledge of the regions, they develop capabilities to understand diverse cultures and open up new possibilities.

Offered Major Courses

European and American Language Studies, European and American Cultural Studies, Asian and African Language Studies, Asian Cultural Studies, etc.

Trans-Regional Studies

Students select one of five academic disciplines: linguistics; linguistics and language processing (linguistics, phonetics, corpus linguistics, etc.); language education studies (English education studies, etc.); interpreting and translation (interpreting and translation studies, communication studies, etc.); literature and cultural theory (literature, thought, cultural anthropology, religious studies, etc.); human sciences (psychology, sports science, etc.). Students conduct linguistic and cultural studies that go beyond a specific language or region in the courses on these topics.

Through the specialist study of a single academic field, students can acquire a rich education rooted in the realities of various regions of the world while always keeping their own major language and region in view.
