Study Abroad
Today, with the development of information technology, news of world events is disseminated around the globe in an instant. Such information, however, is often fragmental and unreliable. On the other hand, the world is flooded with information, and which information is useful is increasingly uncertain. In our contemporary age, therefore, it is becoming more and more important to have sound judgment.
In this backdrop, TUFS believes it is extremely important for students studying foreign languages and foreign countries at the University to travel abroad to see, experience, and learn about foreign countries while they are still students.
Recently, an increasing number of TUFS students have taken various opportunities to actively participate in overseas training and overseas study programs. TUFS, which aims to develop students having an international perspective with a focus on foreign-language education and area studies, will continue to actively support and improve student overseas study, overseas training, and other similar programs in the future.
By March 2004, TUFS had concluded agreements with 52 universities in 28 countries and one territory. In recent years, the University has sent approximately 70 graduate and undergraduate students to these universities each year. Besides overseas study based on the inter-university exchange agreements mentioned above, some 300 students travel abroad at their own expense each year to study for about one year (some students temporarily withdraw from university classes during this period). Furthermore, the number of students who take advantage of long summer or spring vacations to travel abroad for a short period of time to receive overseas training is continuing to grow each year.
TUFS’s Current Overseas Study System
Sending selected students to partner universities
Internally selected undergraduate students in their second year or higher and graduate students are sent to TUFS’s partner universities as exchange students to study for three months or more and one year or less. Except for certain universities, students enjoy such privileges as exemption from tuition fees at the partner university in accordance with the inter-university exchange agreements. When the University sends students to its partner universities under this system, students are granted the status of a student studying overseas. They are required to pay tuition fees to TUFS and are allowed to advance to an upper level. Credits students in their second year or higher earn at the partner university are certified upon their return to Japan as equivalent to those earned from classes at TUFS.
Withdrawing from university temporarily and studying at non-partner university at one’s own expense
Students in their third year or higher may withdraw from the University for six months or more and one year or less, travel abroad to study at a foreign university or similar institution TUFS deems as having a sufficient curriculum and a high academic level, and request TUFS to recognize the credits earned as equivalent to credits granted by the University. During this period, the students are only allowed to be enrolled as being absent temporarily. They are exempted from tuition fees at TUFS but are not allowed to advance to an upper level.
In some instances, credits students in their third year or higher earn at a partner or non-partner university can be certified upon their return to Japan as equivalent to those earned from classes at TUFS. However, studnets must confirm with the Educational Affairs Division before leaving Japan.
Overseas Training
Irrespective of their year of study, students may withdraw from the University temporarily and travel abroad to study at an overseas university, language school, or similar institution without asking the University for credit recognition. During this period, the students are only allowed to be enrolled as being absent from university temporarily. They are exempted from tuition fees at TUFS but are not allowed to advance to an upper level. Requests for recognizing credits are not accepted.
