As a required subject for first-year students in the African Studies Department of the School of International and Area Studies, a series of lectures by ambassadors from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is being held every Wednesday in the second period of the fall quarter. To date, ambassadors from the embassies of seven countries have visited and given lectures. This report features the six lectures that were given from Wednesday, October 16, 2024 to Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
2nd Lecture | October 16th | Republic of Zambia | Mr. Mundandamo Kaweza, First Secretary |
3rd Lecture | October 23rd | United Republic of Tanzania | Mr. Greyson Ishengoma, Counsellor |
4th Lecture | October 30th | Republic of South Africa | Ms Annelize Schroeder Minister Plenipotentiary / Charge d’Affaires a.i. |
5th Lecture | November 6th | Republic of Namibia | Ms. Martha Kanu, Deputy Ambassador |
6th Lecture | November 13th | Republic of Mozambique | Mr. Jose Antonio Justino Nhalungo, Charge d'Affaires a.i. |
7th Lecture | November 27th | Republic of Malawi | Mr. Gracious Soko, First Secretary |
The lecturers prepared their own teaching materials and put a lot of thought into the content of their lectures, introducing the nature and geography of their respective countries, political developments from independence from the colonial power to the present day, economic and industrial trends, and cooperative relations with Japan, etc., in easy-to-understand English. The students, who had done some preliminary research on each country, asked in-depth questions about environmental issues, territorial issues, development issues, etc., and enjoyed lively exchanges with the diplomats.
This series of lectures has been held on campus since 2012 to promote exchange between Japan and Southern African countries. With the cooperation of the SADC embassies, we are holding this series of lectures again this year. There are only five lectures left this year, and they are scheduled to be held on Wednesdays in the second period of the fall quarter.
