TUFS Participates in TICAD8 Preliminary Events

TUFS participated in two official preliminary events of the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8) held in Tunisia on August 27-28, 2022. The two events were the Japan-Africa University Exchange Conference of August 22, 2022, and the New Frontier of Student Exchange between Japanese and African Universities event of August 24, 2022.
TICAD is an international conference on the theme of African development, organized by the Japanese government in collaboration with the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the African Union Commission (AUC).
The Japan-Africa University Exchange Conference held online on Monday, August 22, was organized by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and attended by presidents and vice presidents of a total of 21 universities including TUFS. TUFS Vice President Jun Matsukuma participated in the conference, introducing TUFS’s human resource and academic exchanges with African universities and discussing the importance of future exchanges with Africa.
The New Frontier of Student Exchange between Japanese and African Universities event held on Thursday, August 24, was part of the International Collaborative Education Program for Developing Highly Innovative Human Resources for SDGs in Africa, a project to strengthen the global development capabilities of universities that TUFS is implementing with Kyoto University. More than 100 participants from Japan and Africa attended the event. In the first event session on Japanese Researchers in African Universities, a presentation was made by Associate Professor Kazuyuki Sasaki of the School of Development Studies, Protestant University of Humanities and Social Sciences, who is also the coordinator of the TUFS Global Japan Desk in Rwanda. In the second session, Professor Shinichi Takeuchi, Director of the TUFS African Studies Center, introduced TUFS’s African studies program and student exchange with Africa.
