University of Melbourne Associate Dean Visits TUFS

June 27, 2022

On Thursday, June 23, Associate Dean (International) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne (Australia), Professor Timothy J. Lynch, visited TUFS and paid a courtesy call on President Kayoko Hayashi. TUFS Vice President Jun Matsukuma (in charge of international affairs) and Professor Philip Seaton (Institute of Japan Studies) were also present at the meeting.

The Japanese language program at the University of Melbourne has the oldest history in Australia. Currently, the University of Melbourne has an average of 2,000 Japanese language learners annually, among all other foreign language learners at the university.

TUFS signed an academic exchange agreement with the University of Melbourne in 2012 and has continued to exchange students and researchers, primarily with the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Arts. In 2018, TUFS opened a Global Japan Office (GJO), a base for Japanese language and Japanese education, on the University of Melbourne campus to promote exchanges in the field of Japan studies. This year marks the renewal of the agreement, and a signing ceremony was held.

Taking advantage of the post-COVID environment, the two universities have agreed to cooperate not only to resume their usual exchange activities, but also to build a new exchange framework including students and researchers.
