SADC Ambassador Relay Lecture Series 2019 Comes to an End

March 3, 2020

The 2019 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ambassador Relay Lecture Series, which began on October 9, successfully came to a close, with this year’s lineup featuring the ambassadors of 11 different countries.

This annual relay lecture series is held second period every Wednesday of the fall semester as a compulsory subject for first-year undergraduate students majoring in African Area Studies in the School of International and Area Studies. With the support of each embassy in the SADC, this series was successfully completed for the 8th time this year since the inception of the African Area Studies major in 2012. This series is a unique and luxurious course in which ambassadors and diplomats from up to 12 Southern African countries give lectures on their respective histories, politics, economics, and various other topics. Each class is filled with individuality, and students have the rare opportunity to experience real Africa. This year, lectures were given by the following ambassadors.

<Comment – SADC Coordinator, Associate Professor SAKAI Makiko>

This year, one of the ambassadors raised the fundamental question of "how much do you know about Japan?" and students unexpectedly rediscovered the Japanese society in which they live. Learning is not a one-way street, it is a mutual relationship between individuals who "get to know" each other to develop friendships. Looking back on the first year of this program, students have become more assertive in the post-lecture Q&As. As globalization advances, both Japan and Africa are undergoing major changes. I would like to further develop this class as a place to promote learning and coexistence between Africa and Japan, all while valuing the flat relationship our countries have from sharing various challenges on the same horizon.
