100th Annual TUFS Boat Competition is Held
July 4, 2013
On Wednesday, May 29, the annual TUFS boat competition was held at the Toda Rowing Course in Toda city, Saitama Prefecture. This competition has a history of 110 years, and it was the 100th time to be held.
The annual boat competition is a school-wide event, and its main participants are freshmen and international students. This year, 93 teams comprised of 465 students competed in the 300-meter boat races on five-seated boats. In addition to the championship races called "hagyo" (men's hagyo and women's hagyo) between the regional and linguistic majors' teams, there were many types of races such as the men's races, women's races and mixed races.
It was a colorful event as usual. Many students dressed in matching T-shirts that reflected the character of each region or language, while some wore creative headdresses or costumes.
The competition gathered much momentum in the "hagyo" races toward the end. Many students cheered on their own regional or linguistic major teams as they ran along the river after the boats.
