Japan Society for Afrasian Studies (JSAS) Annual Conference 2022 will be conducted on July 9, 2022. The conference will be supported by African Studies Center - TUFS.

The main theme is "Africa and Asia at the Crossroads: The Pandemic, Resilience, and Mobilities", practical recommendations after having experienced the pandemic and looking beyond the pandemic. The themes around TICAD are also welcome.

Call for Papers

The Japan Society for Afrasian Studies (JSAS) will hold its annual academic conference on July 9th 2022. JSAS is a multi-disciplinary research platform of African studies in Japan/Asia and, potentially, of Japanese/Asian studies in Africa. Its focus is the creation of inter-cultural and inter-generational links to facilitate dialogue among participants on issues affecting Africa and Asia.

The 2022 JSAS conference will take place as the world is still reeling from the effects and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic which has restructured the political, economic, and cultural life of multiple societies in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. 2022 will also be a year when the Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development (TICAD) will be held for the second time on African soil. In 2022, we will therefore encourage practical　recommendations based on a wide range of academic research including history, economics, politics, development studies, anthropology, sociology, and so on, based on the experiences through the pandemic and looking beyond the pandemic. We will also pay special attention to themes around TICAD as we provide a platform for dialogue with academic researchers and practitioners.

Africa-Japan Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers Mentorship Session｜

There will also be a special parallel session to accommodate early career researchers interested in various topics in Africa and Japan. It will be a chance to showcase their research, present preliminary findings or results, and engage in academic exchange with colleagues and invited specialists. This session aims to create a space for networking, connecting, and mentoring. We also aspire to have an opening for young researchers to obtain relevant feedback from esteemed researchers in their areas of specialisation as we facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and coordination within Japan and in various African countries. This session also aims to promote access to information and resources, helping to sharpen research, writing, and publication skills. It is also aimed as guidance towards identifying relevant research topics and projects. We accept proposals from both qualitative and quantitative approaches on the themes sub-themes mentioned above. The categories of young researchers may include the following:

1. Doctoral students in Japan-based universities from all the countries, whose research topics are on Africa-related issues.

2. Doctoral students in Japan-based universities from African countries, whose research topics are on Japan related issues.

3. Post-Doctoral researchers in Japan-based universities from all the countries, whose research topics are on Africa related issues.

4. Post-Doctoral researchers in Japan-based universities from African countries, whose research topics are on Japan related issues.

Application Guidelines

Those who wish to participate/organise roundtables, workshops, paper presentations, or Africa-Japan Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers Mentorship Session are requested to access the Google form and submit relevant information including 1. name, 2. an e-mail address, 3. affiliation, 4. type of presentation, 5. title/ topic of the research, 6. 4-6 keywords, and 7. a 300-400 words abstract.

Prospective presenters will be shortlisted through a careful peer review of the abstracts by the organising committee. Your application should reach the conference committee on or before 20th June 2022. The shortlisted applicants will be informed on 27th June 2022.
